Often it feels like a bad case of gas, but then there's that burning sensation as if something got stuck on the way down that can last for hours. Despite it's name, heartburn indigestion has nothing to do with your heart, it happens in the upper portion of your stomach.

There are a few mistakes that can cause heartburn indigestion and is common for almost everyone who has experienced it. Yet the best prevention is to start with how you eat and ends with the choice of foods you are eating.

Most of us start feeling sleepy after a heavy meal and the natural response is to plop down on the sofa for a quick nap. This is the first mistake and a bad move. Lying down within 3 hours of eating is the last thing you should do and is often the most common cause leading to indigestion.

Eating your food too fast is another common mistake, and many of us do this regularly because our lifestyles are constantly busy. Your mother was right when she told you to slow down and chew your food properly.


Fatty foods is another culprit. If you've ever eaten a greasy burger with fries, you quickly recognize that queasy nauseated feeling afterward.

Whatever you choose to call it, relief for occasional indigestion and heartburn may be no further than your kitchen. It seems we all have an old family recipe or cure for indigestion and some of them go from the simple cola guzzle to the weirdness of sniffing fresh fish.

These simple home remedies are the most widely known that appear to have a global presence and lots of people swear work, but be warned some of the cures have a taste that all their own.

Remedy #1. Lemon & Baking Soda
In 8 ounces of water, mix a half lemon and 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda. Drink before baking soda stops foaming. Taste? Not great, but has been known to do the job of making you burp within 5 minutes or less.

Remedy #2. Fresh Ginger & Peppermint Tea
In 8 ounces of boiling water, mix a teaspoon of ground ginger and one teaspoon of crushed peppermint leaves. Steep and allow to cool enough to sip without burning your mouth. Taste? A lot to be desired, but the ginger helps control the nausea and the peppermint will help relieve the bloating.


Remedy #3. White Distilled Vinegar
Drink one tablespoon of white distilled vinegar when you first notice feelings of indigestion. Taste? If you can get pass the smell, you might just be prepare for this one. Interestingly enough, this remedy is sworn by with a great number of people to get fast relief especially if your heartburn comes from a heavy meal.

Remedy #4. Aloe Vera Juice
Widely known for its healing properties, enzymes in aloe vera juice aid digestion by neutralizing the acids in your stomach to relieve gas. Taste? Let's just say it's best to drink it cold and fast.

There you have it. Home remedies for that gas and bloating caused by indigestion and heartburn. Will these remedies always work? On this it comes back to individual trial and error - oh, and what your taste buds can handle.
